Neighborhood Record Store

We first opened our doors in December 1979 in nearby Romulus Michigan. Taking great pride in our craft, we carried everything from chart toping R&B and Disco records, to hard to find Jazz and Gospel gems.

Expanding into Fashion and Hip Hop

After moving to Ypsilanti in 1982, Puffer Reds began to expand into the world of fashion. We got our start with denim brands such as Guess, and screen printed our T-shirts and tops to match. Eventually we began carrying other brands. With the rise of hip-hop, not only did we carry a larger variety of music, but also began to carry adidas, which was growing increasingly popular within the culture thanks to RUN-DMC.

Though Puffer Reds had already built a reputation for artist visits, the 90s saw legends such as Notorious BIG, Ice Cube, Aaliyah and Outkast make frequent visits to the store for music promos. On top of becoming an official Nike seller, Puffer Reds expanded its fashion repetoir with street brands like Roca-Wear, Sean John, Pelle-Pelle & Fubu. To further cement it's image as a "one-stop-shop" Puffer Reds established a 2nd business, "PRs", specializing in high-end dress fashion, carrying mens suits and furs.

The new Millennium saw the addition of fashion brands Coogi, Girbaud, Phat Pharm and even womens brands like Baby Phat. With the installation of the exclusive Air Force 1 Door (one of only 25 in the country) Puffer Reds was the only destination in Michigan to carry a variety of styles of the classic Nike sneaker. During this time period Puffer Reds cemented themselves within Detroit and adidas Fashion history by becoming one of 4 stores in the country to receive an adidas Forum collab shoe for the sneakers 25th anniversary. Puffer Reds continued to expand when our Wayne locaiton, then called "Jus Shooz", was established in 2004.

With digital music at new heights, Puffer Reds stepped away from the music industry and bolstered it's image as a hub for the latest sneakers and apparel. After being one of the few stores in the nation to release the Nike Air Yeezys, Puffer Reds continued this trend in the 2010s with exclusive releases like the adidas x Big Sean Pro Model II 'Detroit Player'. On top of sneaker releases, Puffer Reds carried Hip Hop trending denim brands such as Mek, Rock & Revival and Robins.

With the inclusion of Trending brands like Purple Brand and Ksubi, and regular releases of Air Jordan Retros, Nike Dunks and adidas YEEZYs Puffer Reds continues to maintain its place in the Metro Detroit fashion scene. Still led by original owner Eric and his wife Tandra Williams, even through the hardships of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Puffer Reds looks to continue it's legacy in the 2020s and beyond.
